Howard Eberle AWS, NWS, USA

Howard Eberle is a self- taught transparent watercolorist who uses drybrush to create the realistic detail found in his paintings. “I consider myself to be a portrait painter of objects and am often drawn to simple, weathered subjects ravaged by time. The peeling paint of wood, rust and stone are all elements that challenge me to create texture with a paintbrush. I consistently challenge myself to create drama in the simplicity of both subject matter and composition.”

Eberle is a Signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Watercolor USA Honor Society, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society and Watercolor Society of North Carolina. He is also an elected member of the Allied Artists of America.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Eberle moved to Pennsylvania for a career as a department store display director. He worked alongside architects and developed an eye for negative space that has influenced his style of painting. His professional career as a watercolor artist began 30 years ago and two of his paintings reside in the permanent collection of the State Museum of Pennsylvania.

Eberle lives in the coastal town of Lewes, Delaware with his wife, Joann.

Born in 1948, trained as a chartered accountant and initially not part of the art world, I got into watercolor in the early 90s, by the greatest of chance, seduced by the phenomenon of pigment fusion. At the end of 1998, I deepened my experience first with Roland Palmaerts both during course sessions and during outdoor internships. I also flitted with other renowned watercolor artists in order to take stock of other ways of seeing this wonderful medium. After having essentially treated landscapes and flowers, I have devoted myself since 2014 to constructed abstraction which combines geometric rigor based on prime numbers while favoring the flexibility of forms and the evanescence of colored gradations. I wish to show, among other things, that, notwithstanding such a precise and rigorous construction, the global vision entails a difficulty in perceiving the exact reality of things.
